Teenager arrested after car ‘deliberately set alight’ with two children inside

A teenager has been arrested after a car was deliberately set alight while two children were still inside.

The incident happened shortly before 11pm on Thursday in Tong Way, Leeds.

West Yorkshire Police said a woman reported her car had been deliberately set on fire while her two children were still in the vehicle.

She and a neighbour took the children to safety and were checked over by ambulance staff with no concerns found, the force said.

A 19-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of arson and released on bail pending further inquiries.

A police statement innitially said: “At 10.52pm on Thursday 18 July, a woman reported her car had been deliberately set alight while two of her children were still in the vehicle in Tong Way, Leeds. 

“She and a neighbour brought the children to safety, and they were checked over by ambulance staff with no concerns found. 

“A 19-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of arson in relation to the incident and remains in custody. Enquiries are ongoing.””
