Teenage starlet relishing 'massive opportunity' after signing for Nottingham Forest

Teenager Jamie McDonnell says signing for Nottingham Forest is a “massive opportunity” not to be missed.

The 16-year-old central midfielder is said to have signed a three-year deal with the Reds to link up with the academy this summer.

It is likely he will join Forest’s Under-18s initially, before looking to make the step up to the Under-23s - a route that has provided a pathway to the first-team for many in the past.

McDonnell has been with Northern Irish club Glentoran for the past two years, having previously played for hometown club Lisburn Youth.

Celtic and West Bromwich Albion were both reportedly chasing his signature, but the youngster says he opted for the City Ground after spending time at the club.

“I spent a full week training with the Under-18s at Forest in December and was also over in February,” he told Belfast Live. “It was the club where I felt most welcome and at home.

“I really enjoyed myself when I was there and I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead.

“I view it as a massive opportunity that can’t be missed. I can’t wait.

“I know I have a lot of hard work ahead of me, but I’m prepared for that.

“It’s a great club with a fantastic history and I’m determined to grab the opportunity with both hands.”

McDonnell has represented Northern Ireland at youth-team level, including captaining the Under-16s.

It is reported he will make the move to Nottingham next month, and will be joined by countryman Dale Taylor, who is also 16.

“Dale and I know each other through the Northern Ireland underage teams and the fact we will be going to Forest together will be a big help,” McDonnell said.
