Teenage sensation Mirra Andreeva powers through to first Grand Slam final

  • Teenage Russian player Mirra Andreeva, aged 19, secured her place in a maiden Grand Slam final after defeating Marta Kostyuk 6-1 6-3 at the French Open.
  • Ukraine’s Andreeva showcased significant maturity and composure throughout the match, maintaining her focus despite Kostyuk's struggles and the crowd's attempts to rally her opponent.
  • Kostyuk, 23, who had an impressive unbeaten run on clay this season with titles in Rouen and Madrid, committed 34 unforced errors and appeared to wilt under the pressure and conditions in Paris.
  • The match was played under bright sunshine but also against the backdrop of the Russian war in Ukraine, with no acknowledgement exchanged between the Russian and Ukrainian players.
  • Andreeva, now the highest-ranked player remaining as the eighth seed, will proceed to face either Diana Shnaider or qualifier Maja Chwalinska in the final, where she will be considered the favourite.
