A teenager has appeared in court, charged over a hit-and-run in Melbourne's eastern suburbs that killed two people.
Boronia man Eric Victorsen, 19, stared straight ahead during a brief appearance in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Sunday afternoon.
He has been charged with two counts of culpable driving and one count of theft of a motor vehicle following a high-speed collision that killed a married couple in their 30s in Wantirna South on Saturday morning.
The husband and wife were at the intersection of Boronia and Stud roads, driving home to The Basin, when their car was struck by an allegedly stolen vehicle which ran a red light.
The cars collided at high speed and debris was spread across the intersection.
The male passenger, aged 38, died at the scene, and his wife, aged 32, died later in hospital.
Police alleged the two people in the other car, Mr Victorsen and a 15-year-old girl from Belgrave, fled the scene.
The pair was later arrested and were given medical treatment.
Mr Victorsen's defence lawyer told the court his client had been diagnosed with an acquired brain injury and has an intellectual disability.
He will remain in custody before a court hearing on Tuesday.
A 15-year-old Belgrave girl charged over the incident will face the Children's Court on Monday.
The girl is facing two counts of culpable driving for being an accessory after the fact and one count of theft of a car.
