Teenage member of staff found dead at Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen

Tributes have been paid to a teenager who has died suddenly while at work at a Welsh hospital.

Rhys Evans, who was 19, died on Wednesday morning at Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen, where he worked.

Police have confirmed that they attended the scene and that his death is being treated as "sudden but not suspicious".

Mr Evans’s family have paid tribute to him, and thanked people for their support during this difficult time.

“Rhys was a much-loved son and brother, and a hard-working colleague at Glangwili General Hospital,” his family said in a statement.

“He would have been 20 next month. We would like to thank family, friends and staff at Glangwili General Hospital for all their kind messages and support - they have meant so much to us.”

Hywel Dda University Health Board has said it is “devastated” at the news, and offered their condolences to Mr Evans’s family and loved ones.

“The whole health board, and particularly those working in Glangwili Hospital, have been devastated at the loss of a dear and well liked colleague Rhys Evans,” said Maria Battle, the health board’s chair.

“Our deepest sympathies are with his family and friends at this time. We are providing support to members of staff affected by this loss.”

A spokeswoman for Dyfed-Powys Police said: “We attended Glangwili Hospital, Carmarthen on Wednesday morning, September 9, 2020, following a report of the sudden death of a male employee.

“His family have been informed. The death is not being treated as suspicious.”

HM Coroner for Carmarthenshire has confirmed that they have been informed of the death but an inquest has not yet been opened.
