Teenage LFC fan took his own life after hidden mental health struggle

The family of a teenage LFC fan who took his own life have paid tribute to the "truly special" boy who "made everyone laugh".

Joel Crockett Devine, 19, was found in his bedroom by his mum, Ruth Marie Crockett, who ran out the house screaming for help, flagging down a passing police car before paramedics arrived at their Wavertree home.

Unfortunately, Joel could not be saved and he was pronounced dead at his family home on the afternoon of April 26.

In touching tributes, his family called him "the life and soul of the party" and had shown none of the warning signs that he was struggling with his mental health.

Natalie Tung, his older sister told the ECHO: "It's been horrific for everyone as he was the 'baby' of our family but most horrific for our mum."

She added: "Joel had never suggested anything to anyone that he was struggling. It's been a massive shock. Joel was very much loved by everyone who knew him.

"Joel had acted completely himself in the days before he died. He had been for a meal with my mum the night before and was his fun loving self. We do not understand why he has taken his life so suddenly and what the reason for this was but something has tipped him over the edge," she added.

The aspiring actor had recently completed a drama course at the Arts Centre, part of Liverpool Community College and his family believed he was excited about his future.

His family said Joel's time at Bank View High School were the "best years of his life" and have thanked all the staff and pupils who have sent them supportive messages since his death.

Special messages from Joel's friends telling his family how much he had helped them in their time of need have brought some comfort to them.

"I've had so many messages of friends of his from school and college," said Natalie.

Joel's mum has given special thanks to his nan Therese Reid, aunt Lorraine Crockett , as well as all the other family and friends who have rallied around her and her family during this difficult time.

His older brother Aaron added: "A couple of his friends from school have been in touch with me saying he was one of the jokers of the class and they could always rely on him to make everyone laugh. They also said he took people under his wing in school to help them."

"He had a heart like no one else, nor had a bad word to say about anybody."

Joel's family are urging anyone else struggling to cope or talk about their mental health to speak out and tell someone, so they never feel pushed to the edge like he was.

A fundraising page was set up to help his family give Joel the 'send off he deserves' at his funeral.

The family have also asked that people support MIND because you "never know what is behind someone's smile."

Natalie said: "I would like to say that if you need someone to talk to or are feeling sad, then please speak to someone as losing someone the way we have the pain is unbearable. We have so many questions that may never be answered. This could have possibly been prevented if Joel would have spoken out. Anyone one of us would have helped him no matter what the problem was. "
