Teenage girl shot with arrow at Queensland supermarket in random attack, police say

A 15-year-old girl has been shot by a man brandishing a compound bow and arrow at a supermarket in Ipswich, west of Brisbane, police say.

Inspector Heath McQueen said a 25-year-old man was at Booval train station wearing a black hoodie and mask, armed with the compound bow.

He said the man fired the bow at a female jogger but missed.

"We are still yet to establish who that female jogger may have been, she may not be aware that a weapon was fired in her direction," Inspector McQueen said.

Inspector McQueen said the man fired again at a car on the corner of Railway Street and South Station Road in Booval.

He said the man then continued to the Aldi supermarket in Booval, firing another two arrows — one at the entrance and one towards the back of the store, which injured the teenager.

The girl has been taken to Queensland Children's Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries to her hand and abdomen.

"Some bystanders then bravely accosted that male person and detained him until police arrived," Inspector McQueen said.

He said police believed the attack was random.

"At this point in time, preliminary investigations haven't identified that it's a targeted attack," Inspector McQueen said.

Police were called to the supermarket at about 4:30pm and arrested the man a short time later.
