Teenage girl shaves off her long hair to help three good causes

A teenage girl has shaved her head for charity, after being inspired by a group of dads who lost their children.

Mia Blease, 16, has raised more than £3,000 and helped three good causes by selflessly having her long, curly hair cropped into a buzz cut.

The shave took place during a fun day, hosted by Mia and her family at the Marple Tavern, where they live.

Mia's previously long hair was braided into two pigtails, which were cut off one by one, before her new style was completed with a close crop.

Mia was inspired to support the baby loss charity Sands, after a football team made up of dads who have lost babies played a game against the pub's team.

The money she has raised will also be shared with the Bluebell ward at the Meadows in Offerton, where her grandma passed away.

Mia's hair meanwhile, has been donated to the Little Princess Trust, which makes wigs for children who have lost their hair through cancer treatment.

The teenager, who was Marple Carnival Queen for three years, was already a keen fundraiser, having previously supported the Wellspring homelessness charity through her former role.

She says that apart from her head being cold, she's now got used to her new cut, after years of having long hair, and joked that she would go to a fancy dress party as GI Jane.

Mia said: "I just thought that this charity was so good to everyone, I wanted to do something".

Her proud mum Dawn says watching Mia have her hair was cut was an emotional moment.

She said: "Her hair was very long and very curly, it was down her back with spiral curls before.

"It was very emotional. It was filmed, and everybody who has seen it has been in tears.

"We didn't know she was going to raise so much money, we're so proud of her."

Mia's fundraising page is still accepting donations, and can be found here.
