Teenage girl 'raped repeatedly by relative' after refusing marriage proposal

A teenage orphan in Pakistan was reportedly sexually assaulted by a relative who she refused to marry

The female victim, aged 17, was allegedly intoxicated and raped over several days after she refused the marriage proposal from her aunt’s brother, according to The Express Tribune newspaper.

The assault in May 2015 allegedly left her pregnant, a fact which she was able to keep secret until January, when she had to tell her relatives what had happened.

She subsequently reported the attack to police.

She told officers that she had gone to stay at her maternal uncle’s house for a few days when his wife’s brother has asked for her hand in marriage. When she refused, she said he repeatedly raped her in the house over three or four days.

The teenager said the man threatened to kill her younger brother if she told anyone about the assaults. She also accused her aunt of abetting her brother by intoxicating her and locking the door from the outside.

Her uncle was not aware of what was happening to her, she said.

After a month, the victim returned to her home in another district.

A police officer told the Express Tribune the suspect had confessed to sexually assaulting the victim several times, adding that if DNA test conducted after the baby’s birth match the suspect’s DNA, the allegations would be confirmed.

A trial will begin once the police complete their investigations and submit their report to the court.
