Investigators are continuing their call for information about a reported assault outside a Hunter shopping centre late last month, during which a teenage girl was punched from behind several times before members of the public intervened.
Two young women, aged 17 and 18, were at a bus stop on John T Bell Drive and Maryland about 5.45pm on November 30 when a black Mazda stopped near them and the occupants of the car spoke to the teenagers.
Police said some of the people in the vehicle were holding baseball bats at the time.
Investigators have been told the teenagers ran from the scene and stopped in the carpark of Maryland Shopping Centre.
Police said on Thursday the 17-year-old was then "punched from behind several times before members of the public assisted her and the offender fled the scene".
Newcastle City Police District officers are investigating the incident - no arrests had been made as of Thursday afternoon.
Police are urging anyone with information - or who may have seen the incident or its lead-up - to contact one of the city's police stations or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Information can be passed on anonymously through the Crime Stoppers phone line or web portal.
