Teenage girl found dead in woodland in Wigan

A teenage girl has been found dead in woodland in Wigan.

Emergency services were called to Ashton Heath, in Ashton-in-Makerfield, just after 6am on Friday (July 19).

A section of the woodland was taped off by police following the tragic discovery.

The girl's age is not yet known. She has not been formally identified.

Greater Manchester Police said the circumstances surrounding the girl's death are not thought to be suspicious.

A force statement read: "Just after 6am on Friday, July 19, 2019, police were called to reports that the body of a teenage girl had been found in the Ashton Heath woodland area in Wigan. 

"Emergency services attended and at this time, it’s not thought there are any suspicious circumstances surrounding the girl’s death. 

"A file will be passed to the coroner."
