Teenage girl dies after car 'fleeing police' crashes in Victoria

The van collided with the truck on the Western Freeway.

A 17-year-old driver has been arrested after his teenage passenger was killed in a crash, as he allegedly tried to avoid police near Ballan, west of Melbourne.

Police allege the boy was driving a stolen van, with the teenage girl as a passenger, after being involved in a home invasion.

They said he was ordered to stop, but he led police on a chase, before crashing into a stationary VicRoads truck on the Western Freeway.

Assistant Commissioner for Road Police Doug Fryer said the pursuit went for about four minutes.

"We've had a tragedy here today ... local police have spotted a vehicle that was wanted, they've put their lights and sirens on to pull it over, and this vehicle made a conscious decision not to stop," he said.

"After a very short pursuit, this vehicle has hit a stationary vehicle at significant speed and a female occupant of that fleeing vehicle has tragically died."

The boy fled from the scene before later being arrested at a house in Ballarat.
