Teenage girl desperate to go to Disneyland before she goes blind forever

The family of a teenage girl with “many life limiting conditions” is determined to get her to Disneyland before she loses vision in both of her eyes.

Leanne Hughes was recently informed by the doctor of her 17-year-old daughter Georgia that the teen is expected to lose sight in both of her eyes.

A fundraiser has now been set up by Kimberley Wassell, Georgia's aunt, to pay to take Georgia to Disneyland in Paris so she can fulfil her "one dream" and "meet all her favourite characters".

Mrs Wassell said that Georgia, who lives in Castleford, West Yorkshire, is "in and out of hospitals all over the country" due to her conditions.

She is already blind in one eye, has issues with her blood vessels that affect her skin and is wheelchair-bound.

Mrs Wassell said the family was told last week at an appointment with specialists that her already impaired vision was getting much worse.

"She will lose her sight in the short term and this isn’t preventable," Mrs Wassell said.

"I want to help to fulfil her wish and get her to Disneyland while she still has her sight so that she has those memories forever.

"She doesn't want to go on any rides. She just wants to meet the characters."

Mrs Wassell said that Georgia is hoping to sing with Elsa and Anna from Frozen and be pushed in her wheelchair by Peter Pan.

"The cost to insure Georgia to go will cost more than the actual trip so this is why I need help to do this. She can't fly so it would have to be the Euro tunnel and insurance is extremely expensive," she explained.

"Literally every single penny will be greatly appreciated. I just want to see that beautiful smile when her wish comes true!"

A target on the GoFundMe page has been set at £3,000 and donations of over £800 have already been made.

Mrs Wassell said: "I set it up because Georgia's wanted to go for a really long time. The Make A Wish Foundation were going to take her there but with Covid everything's come to a standstill.

"Leanne (Georgia's mum) doesn't want to see Georgia as a charity case and doesn't like to ask for help but I said it's time she let somebody help her a bit."

She said that Georgia would likely be accompanied to Disneyland by her mother and grandmother if the trip were able to go ahead.

She also said that there wasn't a date in mind to go to Paris as Georgia was still self isolating due to her conditions.

"It's just when things are safe enough to do so", she said. "But obviously we are hoping to do it before her sight gets much worse."
