Teenage girl arrested after fire breaks out at high-rise city centre flats

A teenage girl was arrested after a fire broke out at a block of city centre flats.

Emergency services attended the high rise building on Hatton Garden over concern for the safety of a 13-year-old girl.

It was reported that the girl, who was inside one of the flats, was threatening to harm herself.

At the same time, it was reported that a prompting crews from Merseyside Fire and Rescue to attend the scene.

Police officers erected a large cordon and implemented road closures in the area while the situation was dealt with.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue confirmed that they were called out and that firefighters extinguished a fire in the kitchen of a flat on the sixth floor.

Merseyside Police told the ECHO : "Emergency services attended Hatton Garden in Liverpool city centre today (Sunday 4 August) after concerns for the safety of a 13-year-old girl.

"Officers attended following a report that the girl, who was inside a premises on the street, was threating to harm herself just before 2.30pm.

"It was further reported that a fire had been started, and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service attended.

"The building was evacuated as a precaution, and the fire has been extinguished.

"There are no reports of anyone being injured or harmed by the fire.

"Hatton Garden was closed to allow the incident to be dealt with.

"A 13-year-old girl has been arrested on suspicion of arson and taken to a police station."

The fire service spokesperson also said: "Firefighters are currently in attendance at a kitchen fire in a high rise block of flats in Hatton Garden, Liverpool City Centre.

"Crews were alerted at 2.44pm and on scene at 2.52pm. Five fire engines are in attendance as well as the combined platform ladder.

"On arrival crews found a fire in the kitchen of a flat on the sixth floor of the building.

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property under rapid deployment to prevent further escalation. Crews used a CO2 extinguisher as well as the dry riser to tackle the fire.

"The fire has been extinguished and crews are using a positive pressure fan to ventilate the property.

"Firefighters are carrying out checks of the surrounding flats."
