Teenage driver caught after allegedly bolting from police

A 15-year-old boy narrowly missed a pram as he revved up the car he was driving to try to evade police. Patrol cars with sirens on then chased the driver until he came to a stop in a no-through-road.

Police said the chase started on Saturday afternoon when they were doing routine patrols in O'Connor.

Officers said they spotted the silver Mazda 323 without registration plates, so they attempted to stop it.

"Police activated their emergency lights signaling for the vehicle to stop," ACT Policing said.

They alleged that "the vehicle immediately reversed up a gutter on a greenbelt causing a member of the public pushing a pram to take evasive action".

The Mazda then took off, travelling through O'Connor and into Turner before stopping at the end of a no-through road, the police said.

"The driver exited the vehicle and fled from police. A short time later police located the driver hiding under a vehicle in a carpark."

The police said that "a 15-year-old teenager was arrested and taken to the ACT Watch House. He will face the ACT Children's Court at a later date charged with fail to stop, aggravated/reckless/dangerous driving and driving while unlicensed.

"Police are urging anyone who witnessed the grey Mazda 323 driving dangerously in O'Connor and Turner yesterday afternoon or has dash-cam footage to come forward."
