Teenage couple attacked in Glasgow city centre for 'being goths'

A teenage couple say they were subject to a terrifying assault in Glasgow city centre simply for being 'goths'.

Lexie Jackson posted on social media to explain she was verbally abused by two men, with one making "wrist-slitting actions" towards them before a physical altercation broke out on Friday night.

Police have confirmed they are investigating the assault that took place on Mitchell Street around 11.30pm on April 15.

Lexie, 19, said one of the males attacked her partner, also 19, and her friends, one of whom was only 15 years old, Glasgow Live reports.

Lexie herself was also punched in the face.

Shockingly, the pair say the abuse is a regular occurrence and have been spat at and drinks thrown at them in recent weeks, leaving the teen "terrified" to go out.

She said: "Both me and my partner experience verbal abuse every day about the way we look.

"Earlier in the week, we were waiting outside St Enoch's for our friend when a group of girls came up to us barking in our faces.

"We told them to leave us alone - we got spat on and a drink from McDonald's thrown over us.

"Two days later we were going into Asda in Clydebank to do our weekly food shop and a group of young boys shouted some nasty remarks, spat on us and we just ignored it."

After posting about her experience on social media, Lexie said she received a barrage of messages from people calling her a 'liar' and saying that she deserved to be attacked.

She added: "Every time we go out someone says something. We keep to ourselves every time and people go out of their way to say and do these things.

"Most of the time we don't say anything and just roll our eyes but it's happened so much recently we have started to defend ourselves."

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "Officers were called to reports of two people being assaulted on Mitchell Street, Glasgow at around 11.50pm on Friday, 15 April, 2022.

"Enquiries are ongoing."
