A teenage boy was left with facial injuries after he was attacked with a 'blade' on a secluded path.
The 16-year-old was allegedly set upon near Segedunum Roman Fort, in Wallsend , on Friday night.
Police say a 'bladed article' was used in the attack, which happened at around 7.40pm.
The victim was taken to hospital but his injuries were not serious.
Another 16-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the incident.
He has been released under investigation.
Detectives probing the alleged attack, which happened on a path behind the Gulf garage, say passers-by intervened to help the victim.
And they now want to trace those people, and anyone else who may have any information.
Det Sgt Ryan Penman, of Northumbria Police’s Central CID team, said: "We know that a number of people were in the area when this assault took place.
"Passer-bys intervened and made sure that the boy was okay but we have been unable to identify many of those witnesses.
"If you were in the area and have information that may help police then we would ask you to get in touch with us by calling 101 or reporting it on our website.
"Officers will be on patrol in the area today and if anyone has any concerns then we would encourage you to speak to them.”
Anyone who was in the area of Segedunum on Friday and witnessed the assault, or those involved leaving the scene, is asked to contact police.
