Teenage boy rushed to Alder Hey after being trapped under tram in Blackpool

A 14-year-old boy is fighting for his life after being trapped under a tram in a freak accident in Blackpool last night.

The teenager was rushed to Alder Hey Children's Hospital in a critical condition after suffering "significant injuries" in the incident, which took place during an event at Blackpool Illuminations.

Emergency services were scrambled to the scene outside the Queens Hotel in Promenade just before 10pm on Tuesday, August 27.

Fire crews had to use specialist equipment to free the boy from under the tram and he was taken straight to Alder Hey for treatment, Manchester Evening News reports.

A fire service spokesman said: "We were called out to reports of a boy being trapped under a tram in Promenade at 9.50pm last night.

"Two units from Blackpool and South Shore attended the scene and we used specialist tram equipment to jack the carriage up, to allow us to rescue the boy.

"He has suffered significant injuries and paramedics took him to Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool."

One witness tweeted: "We were in that very tram which had the accident this late evening. It was awful."

Another added: "Had a great ride at Blackpool's Ride the lights tonight but sadly seems that at the end would appear their was some sort of collision involving a cyclist and a team towards the end of the evening which I didn't see happen."

The event, called Ride the Lights, sees hundreds of families cycle along the promenade and get a preview of Blackpool Illuminations.
