A 17-year-old boy was killed Thursday while standing outside with his 15-year-old friend in the Chicago Lawn area on the Southwest Side.

The pair were outside about 12:25 a.m. in the 6900 block of South Maplewood Avenue when an unknown person approached them on foot, Chicago police said. They tried to run to a nearby apartment, but the person fired shots and hit the 17-year-old in the chest.

The teen was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and pronounced dead, police said. His friend was unable to provide police with a description of the shooter.

Area Central detectives are investigating.
