Teenage boy in hospital after being pulled from the canal in Droylsden

A teenager has been taken to hospital after falling into a canal in Droylsden.

The emergency services were scrambled to a stretch of the Ashton Canal near the town centre on Wednesday evening.

It followed reports that a teenage boy had fallen into the water.

Police, firefighters and paramedics were sent to Buckley Street just off the A662 Manchester Road.

He was rescued from the water before firefighters arrived at the scene.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police confirmed the incident was 'on-going'.

He added: "A teenage boy has fallen in the canal. He has been taken to hospital."

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "At approximately 5.57pm two fire engines,  a technical response unit and the water incident unit from Eccles were mobilised to Buckley Street in Droylsden to reports of someone in the water.

"Upon arrival the casualty had been rescued from the water and was taken to hospital by the North West Ambulance Service. We were there approximately one hour."
