A 16-year-old boy has died following a car crash on the South Coast.

Police officers found a Ford Falcon crashed into a tree and on fire at about 2.50am while patrolling the Princes Highway at Benandarah on Sunday.

The officers, from Batemans Bay Highway Patrol, extinguished the fire and found a 17-year-old girl with serious injuries inside the car.

Officers discovered the body of the male driver, who had died at the scene, shortly afterward.

The girl, a passenger, was rescued from the car at 5am and was airlifted to Canberra Hospital.

South Coast Police District officers established a crime scene and are investigating the crash.
