Teenage boy and girl arrested after police officer suffers head injuries in bike chase

A teenage boy and girl have been arrested after an officer suffered serious head and face injuries during a bike chase.

The incident led to a large police presence on streets in Anfield last night and and this morning after the incident at about 8.45pm on Monday.

Police said officers were on patrol when they spotted a male on what was believed to be a stolen electric bike near the junction of Priory Road and Utting Avenue.

Officers ran after the male, aged 16, on foot, before one of the officers fell and suffered a "serious head injury".

Police said the officer fell and hit his head against a wall after it's believed a bike was thrown into his path.

He suffered "a number of fractures to his skull and significant facial injuries", police said.

Inquires are now underway to establish how this happened.

Despite the officer's injuries, he "bravely" continued to chase the teen and detain him.

When arrested, the male also suffered an injury, but to his ankle.

The officer was rushed to hospital afterwards for treatment. He remains there today.

A large police presence remains at Priory Road and Utting Avenue.

Police said a 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, theft, and possession of Class B drugs.

He was also taken to hospital for his ankle injury, police said, but has since been released.

He is currently in a police station and will be interviewed by detectives.

A 14-year-old female, was also arrested at the scene on suspicion of theft and has been taken to a police station, where she will be interviewed by detectives.

Police are urging people to come forward with any information.

Detective Superintendent Dave McCaughrean said: "An investigation is ongoing and I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident, or has any CCTV or dashcam footage to please get in touch.”
