A 14-year-old boy reportedly shot and wounded his older sister, and fatally shot her boyfriend during a “house party gone bad”.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez of Harris County, Texas, said the incident occurred in a home where about ten young adults and teenagers were gathered on Saturday night.

In a series of tweets, he said an "altercation" broke out between the teenager and his sister’s 20-year-old boyfriend, and he used a shotgun to open fire.

The teenager’s sister, who was named as Briana Hernandez, 18, was reportedly struck and wounded on her upper body. She was taken to a trauma centre and is in a stable condition.

The 20-year-old man was declared dead when police arrived at the scene.

“It was basically a house party gone bad,” said Mr Gonzalez. He confirmed that the teenager was taken into custody and later released.

According to Newsweek, the party was held at the teenager and his sister's home while their parents were abroad.

An investigation has been launched and a juvenile prosecutor will review its findings “in the near future”, he added.
