5 people wounded in separate shootings on Far South, West sides

Aug. 08--At least five people were wounded in separate shootings Friday morning and evening across the city, police said.

Most recently, three men were wounded in a shooting about 9:28 p.m. in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side, said Chicago Police Department spokesman Officer Ron Gaines.

A 20-year-old man, a 34-year-old man and a man in his 20s were all shot in their right legs while they were standing outside in the 600 block of North Springfield Avenue, Gaines said.

All three were taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County, where they were listed in good condition. The man, who was described as being in his 20s, was being uncooperative with officers, police said.

No other information about the shooting was immediately available.

Earlier, on Friday morning, police responding to a brawl on the Far South Side found a 17-year-old boy grazed in the back, authorities said.

Officers were called to the fight at 131st Street and Langley Avenue around 9:25 a.m., according to Officer Jose Estrada, a spokesman for the Chicago Police Department. A group of people scattered, and the officers found the wounded teen, he said.

The teen was transported to Roseland Community Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, Fire Department spokesman Jeff Lyle said.

The incident occurred a block east of Aldridge Elementary School. Though school is not back in session until Sept. 8, Aldridge is a lunch-stop location for Chicago Public Schools and serves meals to children age 1 through 18 starting at 10:30 a.m.

In another shooting on the Far South Side on Friday, a bullet shot through the home of a 60-year-old woman at 96th Street and Crandon Avenue shortly before 8 a.m. and grazed the right side of her forehead, Estrada said.

Police were trying to determine where the shot came from.

"We don't know if it happened on the block or a block over or down the street," Estrada said. "It appears she was not the intended target."

The woman was treated on scene, he said. "Any gunfire that comes into your home is going to cause you some sort of distress," he said.
