Teen who stabbed student, 16, to death outside college is jailed for 19 years

A teenager who stabbed a student to death in an attack outside a college has been jailed for 19 years.

Laoui Ali, 17, was on bail when he plunged a knife into the chest of Sidali Mohamed, 16, outside Joseph Chamberlain College in Birmingham on February 13.

Chilling CCTV footage showed Ali putting on a black mask as he stalked Sidali - whose family fled wartorn Somalia when he was a toddler - before stabbing the student with a two-pronged knife in broad daylight.

After an exchange of words Ali lunged at Sidali shouting "nobody f***s with my sister" as horrified students watched the attack unfold.

The young victim staggered away and collapsed inside the college grounds where staff battled to keep him alive.

He was rushed to hospital where he died of his injuries two days later.

Ali showed no emotion as he was jailed at Birmingham Crown Court on Monday, BirminghamLive reports.

Judge Mark Wall QC told him: "Your actions have left devastation In their wake.

"Sidali’s loss has been deeply felt by his family and friends.

"His mother has anxiety attacks and his brothers now fear going to school.

"His death is described as leaving a huge void in their lives."

Footage shown to the jury showed Ali taking a bus to the college and then waiting outside the gates for Sidali with a concealed knife.

He put on a mask, walked across a green and waited as students walked past him.

Sidali walked past Ali, spoke to a group of friends and then walked back to face his killer.

After an exchange of words Ali lunged forward and punched Sidali, and fatally stabbed him during a fight on the grass.

Ali was on bail at the time for another wounding in Birmingham in December 2018.

He and an accomplice stabbed a man in the arm as he walked down the street.

A jury convicted aspiring boxer Ali of murder last Friday following a trial at Birmingham Crown Court.

He was also found guilty of stabbing another student during the same incident, but cleared of stabbing a security guard.

Also was also found guilty of the unrelated wounding and possession of an offensive weapon in December.

He was found not guilty of making threats with an offensive weapon in the same incident.

In a statement read out in court on Friday, Sidali's family paid tribute to their "happy little boy".

They said: "Sidali was an amazing son, brother, cousin, nephew and a fantastic friend.

"Sidali was an ambitious young man with his whole life ahead of him.

"Sidali's death has left a huge void in our family.

"We hope this conviction will serve as a lesson to those young people who are involved in knife crime.

"Sidali will always be remembered as our happy little boy who brought joy and happiness amongst his family and friends.

"Sidali will always remain in our hearts and his legacy will live on."
