- An Australian teenager's reduced prison sentence for the fatal stabbing of British woman Emma Lovell during a 2022 home invasion has been overturned by the High Court of Australia.
- The High Court unanimously ruled that the Queensland court of appeal should not have reduced the minimum detention period, thereby restoring the original 14-year sentence.
- Emma Lovell, 41, who had moved from Suffolk, was killed on Boxing Day 2022 after confronting two intruders at her North Lakes home, with her husband also sustaining stab wounds.
- The teenager, who was 17 at the time of the offence and cannot be named, had pleaded guilty to murder and other charges, initially sentenced to serve 70 per cent of his term before release.
- Queensland attorney general Deb Frecklington appealed the reduction, with the High Court agreeing that the appeal court had wrongly substituted its own assessment for the sentencing judge's.
