Teen who kicked police officer has court date delayed to finish school exams

The teen was on parole when he attacked the police officer, leaving him with a black eye.

A Melbourne teenager who kicked a police officer in the face will be allowed to finish his Year 12 school exams before he faces two new charges.

The teenager, who cannot be named, appeared in the Children's Court today.

The youth walked away from court without a conviction in February after he kicked a police officer in the head at the Highpoint Shopping Centre in Melbourne's west on Boxing Day.

He was on parole at the time of the attack.

The state's Police Association said it was furious after he received nine months' probation at the earlier Children's Court hearing, saying there were gaping holes in Victoria's sentencing laws.

In court today, Magistrate Stephen Myall delayed court dates to hear the two new charges until December so it "doesn't impede the completion of his secondary education".

Mr Myall also refused to release the details of the new charges after the ABC and other media representatives today applied for the charge sheets.
