Teen undergoes surgery after robber slashes him with knife in terrifying carjacking attempt in leisure centre car park

An 18-year-old has been left with a 'nasty' cut to his arm after a man allegedly slashed at him with a knife in an 'unprovoked' attack.

The victim was driving his grey Volkswagen Polo along Bridgewater Road, Worsley, at around 5.45pm on Monday (January 25).

After parking up at Worsley Leisure Centre to answer his phone, a stranger opened the car's passenger door and threatened the driver with a 12 inch knife.

The man, who was wearing all dark clothing and gloves, demanded that the driver get out of the car and after a 'verbal altercation', police said the victim tried to escape by reversing his car.

While he was reversing, the attacker slashed his left arm with the knife, leaving a deep wound.

The offender is then believed to have fled in the direction of a wooded area, close to the leisure centre.

Following the assault, the victim required surgery but the injuries are not believed to be life changing.

No arrests have been made and police are appealing for any witnesses or information.

Detective Constable Darren Lowe of GMP's Salford District said: "This was a violent and seemingly unprovoked attack which has left a man with a particularly nasty injury to his arm and for which we wish him a speedy recovery.

"We are appealing to anyone who may have been in the area at the time and either witnessed the assault or saw the offender prior to or post assault.

"We urge anyone who witnessed anything suspicious at the time to come forward and assist police in their enquiries."

Anyone with information should contact police on 0161 856 5194 quoting incident number 2147 of 25/01/21.

Alternatively, details can be passed on anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
