Teen umpire allegedly assaulted at junior cricket match

A 15-year-old boy umpiring an under-11s cricket match has been taken to hospital after allegedly being assaulted at a game in Melbourne's west.

The incident happened at a match between Caroline Springs and Sunshine cricket clubs at a sports reserve on Phoenix Street in Sunshine North about 7:00pm on Friday.

In a post on the Caroline Springs club Facebook page, president Steve Collins said the incident was in the hands of police.

"We do ask that any concerned members of the club direct any questions to myself or the committee and not to look to social media to comment on this," he said.

"We do not want to drop to the low standards of others."

He thanked parents who were present during the incident for remaining calm and ensuring the safety of the junior players.

The teen was taken to hospital as a precaution and Chris Hatzistavrou from the Western Junior Cricket Association said "everyone is fine".

He declined to make further comment, saying they were following due process and a statement would be released later.

Police said a number of people were spoken to at the scene as part of their investigation but no-one had been charged and the investigation was continuing.
