Teen thug who attacked gran in her home 'beaten to a pulp' in jail fight

A teenager who brutally attacked an elderly lady in her home suffered a broken jaw in a jail fight.

Brendan Lee Burton attacked his neighbour Anita Christanga, 78, at her home in  Sydney in January, 2017.

She was left with serious injuries including a broken nose, jaw and eye socket, bleeding on the brain and six fractured ribs.

The woman died four months after the attack by Burton, who was 18 at the time.

It is unclear whether her death was a result of the beating and so Burton was arrested over the assault and charged with two counts of causing grievous bodily harm and committing a serious indictable offence.

He later confessed to the attack.

Last week, Burton was caught in a fight with another inmate, leaving him with a broken jaw.

Ms Christanga's son daughter-in-law spoke out about her mother's horrific experience outside Penrith Local Court on July 24.

Her son, Samuel Christanga, said: "We've lost a mother, kids have lost a grandmother, my wife's lost a mother-in-law and friends have lost a dear friend.

"She should have been safe in her house but she wasn't."

"She loved her dancing, wherever she went she had friends and she loved the community she lived in for 35 years."

Burton is awaiting sentencing which has since been delayed as he recovers from his injuries.

He could face up to a 20 year maximum prison sentence for grievous bodily harm.
