Teen threatened mum with a knife and hit her with a photo frame after she refused him a cigarette

A teenager threatened his mum with a knife and hit her over the head with a picture frame after "losing the plot" when she said she didn't have a cigarette to give him.

Curtis Lawton had been staying the night at his mother's house in September last year when he went into her bedroom as she slept, demanding a cigarette.

Newcastle Crown Court heard the woman told Lawton she didn't have one to give him - and he responded by "picking up a picture frame and hitting her over the head, while shouting he wanted a cigarette".

Claire Anderson, prosecuting, said Lawton's mum went downstairs but as he continued to be aggressive, "thought it was best to leave the house".

Ms Anderson said: "As she went down the street the defendant ran out of the property and pushed her with both his hands, causing her to fall over.

"The defendant then returned to the property and by the time she had managed to get to her feet she saw the defendant was in possession of a large silver kitchen knife with a blade of around four inches long."

The court heard Lawton, now 19, ran towards his mother with the knife while screaming at her.

Ms Anderson said Lawton's sister, who lives nearby, came outside to help her mum and informed Lawton she was calling the police.

He responded by "shouting and swearing", it was said.

When the two women went inside they saw Lawton at the front of the house holding up the knife and shouting "Do you f****** want some".

The court heard police attended but were unable to find Lawton, however he handed himself into Southwick police station two days later.

Lawton, of High Street East, Sunderland , admitted he had "lost his temper" and gone "into rage mode".

He told police he "felt bad for frightening his mother but couldn't help it because he'd lost the plot".

In a victim personal statement, Lawton's mum said she was no longer scared but "will not be letting him back in my home".

Lawton admitted common assault and threatening another with a bladed article.

Jennifer Coxon, defending, said Lawton was "deeply remorseful" and had found his time in custody difficult.

She added that he "felt lost without his mother".

Judge Edward Bindloss sentenced Lawton to six months behind bars.

Judge Bindloss said this was "a nasty offence against his mother" but against a background of Lawton's "complex and troubling upbringing".
