Teen Tasered and battered by police ‘who thought he was an adult due to height’

A teenage boy was allegedly Tasered and beaten to a pulp by police officers after they mistook him for an adult because of to his height.

Jahmel Leach, 16,  was walking home and not taking part in the Black Lives Matter protests in New York when he was Tasered, his family's lawyer said.

A shocking picture shows the youngster lying in a hospital bed with a bloodied face and mouth after he suffered a damaged jaw and facial injuries.

Lawyer Mark Shirian, who is representing the teen, told CNN: "They had no grounds to arrest him. Are we going to allow them to police the youth in that way?"

A source told CNN Jahmel was arrested after police saw someone pour a substance over rubbish and set fire to it.

However, Mr Shirian said Jahmel denied these claims - and the teen has not been charged.

He added that the teen and his family have been traumatised by the encounter.

An officer told his mother Daisy Acevedo they did not know his age when they arrested him, his family said.

They claim the officer said: "I'm sorry he is so tall I thought he was an adult when I took him down."

His cousin Yamil Miller told the New York Daily News looters were raiding stores nearby when Jahmel was targeted while walking home.

He was apparently carrying a stick and was Tasered three times by police.

The New York Police Department told CNN it was reviewing the incident.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said he had met Jahmel's family and was troubled by what they had told him.

He pledged to get answers on their behalf, the Sun reports.

It comes after demonstrations were held across the US over the killing of African American George Floyd.

A white policeman was filmed kneeling on Mr Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes before he died.
