Teen swung wooden bat at partner's ex during North Shields street brawl

A teenager swung a wooden bat at his girlfriend's ex-partner during a street brawl in North Tyneside.

Police descended on the Saville Street area of North Shields in the days before Christmas after officers had seen a group of males fighting with weapons on CCTV.

A court heard that Tyler Davison was spotted at the scene and spoken to and he immediately admitted to being one of those involved.

The 19-year-old was then arrested and found to be in possession of a wooden bat.

Davison, of Saville Street, in North Shields, appeared at North Tyneside Magistrates' Court to plead guilty to a public order offence and possessing an offensive weapon in public.

Prosecutor, Grace Taylor, said officers attended Saville Street on December 19 last year after watching CCTV of the area and seeing a fight erupt.

She added: "A group of males were fighting in the street with weapons. Police attended and spoke to the defendant, who admitted he was one of the males and was in possession of a wooden bat.

"In interview, he was his partner's ex had shown up. They had been drinking and the ex started making threats towards him, so he went into the house and grabbed a bat and was swinging it around towards his partner's ex but didn't hit him with it."

The court heard that Davison had six offences on his record and was last in trouble in September 2020.

Mark Harrison, mitigating, said: "I suspect you will want a pre-sentence report."

District Judge Paul Currer agreed that he did want a report and adjourned the case until next month.

He told Davison: "You're a young man who is lightly convicted.

"You were drinking in the street, your girlfriend's ex-partner arrived. There was some tension, you swung a bat around, although you didn't hit anybody with it. I'm going to need a report."

Davison was released on unconditional bail to appear back at the same court on February 17 for sentence.
