An 18-year-old man who was rushed to hospital after an industrial accident in which his dad died remains in a critical condition.
Emergency services were called to the Unity Building at the corner of Chapel Street and Rumford Place at around 3.30pm on Wednesday.
David Bottomley, 53, died at the scene and his son Clayton, 18, was rushed to hospital.
This morning police have said that his condition remains "critical".
The two men, from Castleford in West Yorkshire, had been working together at the Unity Building in Liverpool when tragedy struck.
Witnesses said the accident involved an external construction lift which suddenly collapsed. Flowers were left at the scene of the accident yesterday.
Yesterday a friend of the family, who asked not to be named, said: "They were both inseparable and very much peas in a pod. "
The Health and Safety Executive have confirmed that they have launched an investigation into the accident.
The friend said David was a highly experienced insulation fitter and had worked at the site in Liverpool city centre for the past two years.
The friend paid tribute to David.
He said: "Dave is a life-long Leeds United fan and a very good friend of mine. I would describe him as very hard working, who always provided for his family.
"He was happy working seven days in a row and never complained. A real grafter and good guy.
"David and his family would do anything for anybody - very decent and fair people.
"This is such a tragedy and I know that we will all want some answers as to what happened."
Laing O’Rourke, who are the lead contractors on the site, confirmed that the company would cooperate fully with the HSE investigation.
A Laing O’Rourke spokesperson said: “We can confirm there was an incident at the Unity Building in which two men were seriously injured. Tragically, one of the men died at the scene and the second is in a critical condition in hospital.
"Our Health and Safety team is at the site and we and our sub-contractors will cooperate fully with the investigation into what happened. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the men at this extremely difficult time.”
A spokesman for the Health and Safety Executive said: “HSE are aware and are investigating with the police.”
