Police have launched a murder investigation after a 19-year-old man was stabbed to death in Bury town centre on Friday afternoon.
Emergency services were called to reports of an attack in Market Street, at around 3.50pm, reported the Manchester Evening News.
The victim was rushed to hospital in a serious condition but has since tragically died, a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson has confirmed tonight.
Police have said his next of kin have been informed.
A large police cordon remains in the town centre and is expected to stay in place until Saturday.
Detective Superintendent Lewis Hughes, of GMP's Bury district, said: "Firstly, I would like to send our condolences to the victim's family. Specialist officers have been deployed to support them in both the short and long terms.
"An investigation is underway and officers are currently following lines of enquiry which will hopefully lead us to those responsible, so we can arrest them and bring them to justice.
"This incident happened in Bury town centre so we know there may be witnesses and members of the public who may have mobile phone footage.
"If you were in Bury town centre at this time and saw any disturbance in or around the Millgate Shopping Centre then we ask that you contact Greater Manchester Police. You can also pass information anonymously via Crimestoppers.
"It is without doubt that this news will have an impact on the community. I would like to offer some reassurance that detectives are leaving no stone unturned and there will be an increased uniform presence in Bury town centre and where appropriate powers of stop search will be utilised."
The victim sought help from staff at nearby Sky Bar, according to a post on their Facebook page.
Sky Bar posted just after 5pm: "Today Sky Bar was put into a very unfortunate situation. A poor young lad has been attacked around Kay Gardens and has unfortunately resulted in a serious injury.
"After the attack the victim has sought help at the nearest place possible, which thankfully was us as all Sky Bar staff and management were luckily all first aid trained and able to assist the young man until emergency services arrived.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with this young man and his family we hope he makes a speedy recovery and the person at fault is apprehend and brought to justice. Please bear with us in this time as we are cooperating with the police investigation and we will back open as soon as possible."
