CHICAGO _ A worker in a Domino's Pizza shop on Chicago's Far North Side heard gunfire behind him and turned just as the glass front door shattered.
"You always hear this stuff happens," the worker said. "But you never expect it to happen on your doorstep, when a bullet flies 5 feet from you."
Just outside, an 18-year-old man had been shot around 10:30 p.m. in the 6600 block of North Clark Street in the Rogers Park neighborhood, a street lined with stores and fast-food restaurants.
The victim was standing in a parking lot when someone fired from a passing car, police said. He was taken to Presence St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, Ill., where his condition was stabilized.
The shooting also left a gaping bullet hole in the upper glass window of a Subway restaurant south of the Domino's.
A man standing outside the store said his wife was working inside when a bullet came through the window, bounced off a brick wall and landed behind the counter.
"It is difficult for people to feel safe," he said.
The 18-year-old man was among six people wounded in shootings in Chicago on Wednesday, according to police.
No one was in custody in the shootings.
