Teen shot by police on South Side

Aug. 22--A Chicago police officer shot a 16-year-old boy on the South Side on Friday night after he pointed a gun toward police, authorities said.

Englewood District tactical officers were on patrol around 7:30 p.m. when they saw a group of people standing in an alley near 71st Street and Marshfield Avenue in the South Side's West Englewood neighborhood, authorities said, citing preliminary information.

A 16-year-old boy who was in the group noticed the officers and ran away while holding his side, authorities said.

Officers on foot and by squad car went after the teen as he fled down the block.

Authorities said the teen then pulled a gun out of his waistband and pointed it toward at least one of the officers. One officer then opened fire on the teen, striking him in the right flank as many as three or four times, authorities said.

The teen was then taken into custody and to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was listed in serious-to-critical condition.

No officers were hurt and a gun was recovered at the scene, authorities said.

This shooting marks the second of its kind in two nights for Chicago police on the South Side.

On Thursday night, an officer shot a 14-year-old boy near 89th Street and Escanaba Avenue in the South Chicago neighborhood after the teen ignored officers' commands to drop a gun he had been carrying in his pocket, authorities said.

They said the teen was shot three times and taken to the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital to be treated. No officers were hurt in that shooting, and a gun was recovered, according to authorities.
