The high school kids are rehearsing their school musical, Teen Scream, down in the derelict theatre on the island across the river. And guess what! It's the story of some all-American high school kids rehearsing their school musical down in the derelict theatre on the island across the river.
There's the teacher trying to hold it all together, the school slut, the rich bitch and the bad boy, who is only there for the extra credits. Oh, and somewhere in the theatre is a crazed killer who is picking them off one by one. With the bridge down and the telephone wires cut, real life is beginning to resemble not just fiction but a slasher movie.
Teen Scream is quite fun, but not as fun as it should be. It can't make up its mind whether it wants to be a fully-fledged musical, a really creepy piece or a spoof.
As a musical it often sounds like something left over from the 1980s; it doesn't rack up the tension enough to be a proper horror; and as a spoof it just can't compete for laughs with Scary Movie.
The young cast work energetically, but it's only in the closing moments when it comes up with an ingenious little twist that Teen Scream really seems to have found its purpose.
