Teen riding sulky narrowly escapes death after being hit by van while crossing dual carriageway in Donegal

This is the dramatic moment when a teenager escaped death after he was struck by a van while crossing a busy dual carriageway.

The unidentified teenager was riding a sulky horse and cart across the N13 road outside Letterkenny in Co Donegal.

Dramatic dash-cam footage taken from within the van shows the horse and cart coming directly into the path of the van which hits it side-on.

The horse, cart and its driver are thrown into the side-lawn lane of the four lane carriageway.

Other drivers immediately pull into the hard shoulder to help at the scene.

One man in a reflective jacket is seen seconds after the crash calling the emergency services.

The incident happened at 11.55am on Wednesday.

It is understood the horse was killed as a result of the collision and the teenager suffered injuries which are not life-threatening.

The driver of the van was shaken but otherwise uninjured following the crash.

A full investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Gardai confirmed that a road traffic collision took place on the road between a horse and a van.

A spokesperson said "Gardaí attended a RTC that occurred between a van and horse and carriage on the N13, Letterkenny, at approximately 12pm, Wednesday 22 July 2020.

"A male youth in his teens was taken to Letterkenny University Hospital with what are believed to be non life-threatening injuries."
