Teen Rescued from Rubble of Collapsed Istanbul Building

Rescue workers are seen at the site of a collapsed residential building in the Kartal district, Istanbul, Turkey, February 7, 2019. (Reuters)

A teenager was rescued on Friday from the rubble of an eight-story apartment building in Istanbul, two days after it collapsed, announced Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu.

The 16-year-old boy was immediately hospitalized, he told reporters at the seen.

There was no information on his condition.

His rescue raised the number of people who have been pulled out of the wreckage to 14. Eleven bodies were recovered.

The residential building, in the Kartal district on the Asian side of the city, collapsed on Wednesday. It was not immediately clear why the building had collapsed.

Friends and relatives waited near the wreckage for news of their missing loved ones as emergency teams, aided by sniffer dogs, worked around the clock to reach possible survivors.

Officials have not disclosed how many people are unaccounted for, and it is not clear if rescuers hope to find any more survivors.

There were 43 people registered in 14 apartments at the address, but the top three floors of the building had been built illegally, the governor said on Wednesday.

He said there was a textile workshop operating without a license at the entrance.

Initial footage from the incident showed people being pulled out of the rubble as crowds surrounded the site. Seven buildings around the collapse site have been evacuated for security reasons.
