Teen 'lost his footing' on top of Rhondda mountain and fell to his death

A teenager who died after "falling from a height" had climbed a mountain with his friends, a coroner heard.

Fynley Taran Jones climbed Pen Pych mountain in the Rhondda with his friends on May 7 this year and lost his footing at the top of the mountain, leading him to fall, an inquest opening was told.

Opening the inquest into the 18-year-old's death at Pontypridd Coroners' Court coroner's officer Richard Lewis said: "He attended Pen Pych with his friends and climbed the mountain. He lost his footing and has fallen from a height. He sadly passed away and was pronounced dead at 6.21pm on the same day." The cause of death was given as 1a blunt head injury.

Emergency services were called to Pen Pych Woodland Park, near Treherbert, shortly after 5.40pm. Police and paramedics arrived at the scene and a Wales Air Ambulance helicopter landed nearby. Police said there were no suspicious no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.

Coroner David Regan adjourned the inquest into the death of Mr Jones, from Meadow Walk, Pentre. A full inquest has been set to take place on October 20, 2022.
