Teen jailed for vicious slap and punch attack on woman on Leeds train

A teenager has been jailed after he viciously attacked a young woman on a train to Leeds.

Lewis Ellis, who was 17 at the time, assaulted the 19-year-old woman - who he knew - on a train to Leeds on July 11 last year. Ellis, of Cemetery Road, Westtown in Dewsbury, punched the woman in the head three times, slapped her repeatedly, kneed her in the thigh and bit her hand before taking her phone, which also contained her bank card and provisional licence.

After his arrest, Ellis harassed the woman by sending her incessant threatening messages in an attempt to get her to drop charges against him.

Following an investigation by the British Transport Police, Ellis was charged with domestic assault, criminal damage and witness intimidation. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court to two years in a young offenders' institute. He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £34.

Detective Sergeant Roy Duran said: "This was a nasty and unprovoked attack on a young woman who was left shaken and terrified. If you witness any crime on the railway you can use our discreet text service 61016 to report it to us."
