Teen jailed for 100 years after shaking baby so hard he fractured her skull

An 18-year-old man has been sentenced to up to 100 years in prison after he shook his daughter so hard he fractured her skull.

Jayden Straight, from the US state of Iowa, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and several related charges on Friday.

Eight-month-old Raija died in July 2018 after suffering serious internal injuries including broken ribs, ruptured spleen, retinal haemorrhaging and multiple skull fractures.

A doctor who treated the baby before she died said the injuries were "from a deliberate assault and could not be explained as unintentional or accidental."

Straight received the maximum sentence for the six charges he pleaded guilty to.

He was originally jailed for 50 years for second-degree murder, Des Moines Register reports.

He was then handed a further five decade-long sentences for three counts of willful injury and two counts of child endangerment resulting in serious injury.

Straight will not be released from jail before 2119 because the six sentences will run consecutively.

Paying tribute to baby Raija, Robin Head, her great grandmother, said: “I can’t never explain that feeling of holding her, laughing with her, touching her, walking with her, crawling with her."
