Teen injured in scrambler crash which killed friend is released from hospital

A teenager injured in the scrambler bike crash that killed James Malins has now been discharged from hospital.

The ECHO has learned James, 18, was driving the bike when it collided with a Volkswagen Tiguan in Allerton on December 23.

The pillion passenger, 18, suffered serious injuries in the incident, which happened at around 8.40pm, and was taken to hospital.

Police said he was discharged on Christmas Day and has not been arrested on suspicion of any offences in relation to the crash.

The car contained a young family, including two children, aged nine and 11, who fortunately did not sustain any serious injuries.

Merseyside Police said the stolen motorbike is thought to have been travelling in tandem along Booker Avenue with another scrambler.

They said it is believed neither of the scrambler bikes had their lights on at the time of the crash, close to West Allerton train station.

A police spokesman said: "Witnesses have reported that neither of the bikes had any lights on.

"The second bike stopped initially and then made off towards Mather Avenue."

Messages were scrawled on a plastic container propped up on the pavement, which read, "Long live Jay!" and "One in a million!"

One longer tribute, written on paper, said: "RIP my brother, love you so much, lad, can't believe you're gone, lad.
