Teen in car sent 'flying' into windscreen on way to McDonald's by hit and run driver

A 17-year-old was smashed into by a hit and run driver while on his way to McDonald's.

Matthew Baker was on his way to the fast food restaurant in Southport, on Monday night, when a black Vauxhall Astra van careered into the back of his blue Renault Clio.

The former engineering student was sat at a red light on Bispham Road, waiting to turn left onto Norwood Road, when the van came 'speeding up the hill' and crashed into the back of him.

Matthew's mum, Dawn Baker, 47, told the ECHO: "He was sat at the traffic lights and he saw a car come flying up behind him, bang, straight into him.

"He's gone flying, hit his head on the windscreen and then the car has backed up off him, drove off and left him there alone.

Matthew's car now looks like a write off (Dawn Baker)

"It looks like the car is a write off, we have no registration number [for the driver].

"There was a witness there that heard the massive bang and saw the car back up.

"I have had tens of people tell me they heard this massive bang and then the guy has just driven off.

"His dad and I have driven around almost every road in Southport today looking for this van."

Following the crash Matthew was taken to A&E and was prescribed with medication for his pain.

Dawn, a self-employed cleaner said: "He's on codeine, ibuprofen and paracetamol.

"He is not okay he is really sore in his neck, his back, his chest, his shoulders, his arms. We got back from A&E at 5am.

"The police have said they've looked at ANPR cameras and they're now looking at CCTV cameras. I have passed a name on that we have been given to police."

Merseyside Police are aware of the incident.
