A 15-year-old who was hospitalised after being rescued from a lake has tragically died.

The boy was pulled from the water at Lough Sheelin, a lake located at a meeting point of counties Westmeath, Meath and Cavan.

He was recovered from the water following a near-drowning incident shortly before 3pm on Tuesday.

Gardai and emergency services attend the scene and the boy was rushed to Temple Street Children's Hospital and has sadly since passed away.

A garda spokesman said: "Gardaí attended the scene of an incident at Lough Sheelin on Tuesday 20th July 2021.

"A male youth was recovered from the water shortly before 3pm.

"He was taken to CHI, Temple Street where his condition was described as serious. He has since passed away."

It comes following a string of deaths on Irish waters this week.

Natasha Core, 30, tragically lost her life after she tried to help her young boy in Lough Gowna in Co Cavan after 9pm on Wednesday night.

The mum-of-two, fondly remembered by locals in the village of Loch Gowna, had gone down to the water with her eldest boy as they enjoyed the weather.

A huge emergency operation was put in place and the Fire services and Civil Defence helped locate Natasha’s body. A helicopter also oversaw the search from above.

Meanwhile a man aged in his 70s tragically passed away after a snorkelling accident on Wednesday evening in Leitrim.

Michael Hoey passed away in Co Leitrim at around 9pm on Wednesday.

The alarm was raised after he failed to return while snorkelling at Spencer Harbour in Drunkeeran.

His body was discovered a short time later by emergency services.
