Teen helps clean up park in Clipstone after admitting starting bin fire

Police have released a statement after a spate of fires at a country park earlier this year.

There were a number of fires started at Vicar Water Country Park in Clipstone in August, which caused "destruction" to the natural habitat there, according to police.

Police say they were able to identify a 15-year-old who started a fire in a dustbin and decided, instead of prosecuting him, organise for him to help out the park ranger.

Sherwood Police wrote on its Facebook page: "Back in August there was a spate of fires at Vicar Water Country Park. Some of the heath land was set alight causing destruction to the natural habit.

"A dustbin was also set on fire, which was witnessed by another park user. We were able to identify a 15 year old male who then admitted to lighting a fire on top of the bin.

The Local Beat Team work closely with Newark & Sherwood District Council and on this occasion the arson and damage was dealt with by means of a community resolution.

"The 15 year old male attended Vicar Water Country Park and assisted the Park Ranger with a clean-up of the park, a litter pick was completed and they also cleared away some of the damaged heath to allow for its regrowth next year.

"On some occasions prosecution isn't always the way forward and doing a day’s work with the person who has to pick up the aftermath of their actions can be a great learning curve."

Police say there have also been reports on anti-social behaviour and criminal damage to cars in Clipstone.

They are urging anyone who has any concerns, or anything to report, to get in touch with them on 101.
