Teen girl and woman, 60, left with facial injuries after ‘noxious substance’ attack in south London

The attack happened at 11.45am, police said (Picture: Jon Ellacott)

A teenage girl and 60-year-old woman have suffered facial injuries after a noxious substance was hurled on them in broad daylight on a south London street.

The pair were attacked at 11.45am on Monday morning, at the junction with Norbury Avenue in Thornton Heath, police said.

Both were rushed to hospital after the substance was thrown towards them from a van. Their injuries were assessed as non-life-threatening.

Witness Jon Ellacott, who lives near to where the shocking assault happened, said: “All we know is that a noxious substance was thrown from a van at a woman with her children, walking down the road.

“[The] first we knew about it was when the fire brigade, police and paramedics turned up.”

Officers said no arrests have been made and enquiries continue.

The force were not able to confirm what the noxious substance was at this stage.
