Teen driver back in court over fatal crash

A teenager accused of killing Kate Leadbetter and Matthew Field has been mentioned in court. (AAP)

The case of a 17-year-old charged with murdering a Brisbane couple in a crash on Australia Day has been brought before a court again, but media have been shut out of the proceedings.

The teenager, who cannot be identified, was held in custody after his first appearance in Brisbane Children's Court last month.

His case was set for mention in the same court on Monday, but requests for media to attend proceedings were refused.

The Logan boy is accused of murdering Kate Leadbetter, 31, and Matthew Field, 37, while walking their dogs on Australia Day.

Police allege the 17-year-old boy ran a red light in a Landcruiser and collided with a truck at an intersection before the 4WD rolled and ploughed into the couple who were crossing the road.

They both died at the scene in Alexandra Hills and it's alleged the teen fled before stealing a set of keys from a nearby house.

He was then arrested by police after being disturbed by the resident.

Police believe the Landcruiser was stolen from a home in Cleveland earlier that afternoon.

The 17-year-old was charged with two counts of murder as well as offences relating to dangerous driving while under the influence of an intoxicant, failing to fulfil duties at the scene of a crash, wilful damage and burglary.

After an earlier appearance he was remanded to reappear by videolink in March. The boy was then required to appear on Monday after being charged with additional offences by police.

But magistrate Rosemary Gilbert said she would refuse requests by the media to attend Children's Court proceedings because reporting on the case could be prejudicial for the teenager.

Flowers placed by dozens of people remain at the crash site some weeks after the couple died.
