A 16-year-old boy who was wounded in a 2019 shooting in suburban Mundelein has died from his injuries, and an autopsy ruled his death a homicide.

Carys Castillo was pronounced dead at 11:14 p.m. April 16 at Lurie Children’s Hospital, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

He was wounded in an incident Sept. 28, 2019, in the 200 block of Longwood Terrace, the medical examiner’s office said.

At the time, Mundelein police said the teen was found with a gunshot wound in an apartment.

Witnesses at the scene gave officers conflicting statements, police said. Investigators eventually came to the conclusion that someone inside the apartment was in possession of the gun when it went of.

Autopsy results found Castillo died of complications from his gunshot wound and ruled his death a homicide, the medical examiner’s office said.

Mundelein police didn’t immediately provide further information.
